Why am I a history major?
I can’t think of a time when I didn’t want to be a history major. This was mainly because I was, quite honestly, absolutely awful at any other subject in school. It wasn’t until this past summer, however, that I truly developed a passion for history.
When staying with my grandparents, I learned a great deal about my genealogy—in particular, that my great-great grandparents, Otto and Wilhelmina Donner, immigrated to the United States from Prussia. Though I’ve always known about my family’s genealogical ties to the German states, discovering something so simple as my relatives’ names seemed to light a spark within me; I suddenly felt a swell of pride and a deep-seeded hunger to learn more, to reconnect with my German heritage.
Now, where I was once lacking passion I have a yearning for history, and not just because it’s the only subject I’m relatively good at, but because I’ve found a reason, a connection with the history I seek to study.
